OP girls tennis wins doubles crown
Karly Hollins and Haley Hollins of Orchard Park defeated Emma Manuel and Alex Rowen of Williamsville East to win the ECIC Doubles Championship in girls tennis. The pair hung on for a 6-2, 3-6, 7-6 (7-3) victory at the Village Glen. The Orchard Park and Williamsville East duos entered the event as the top two seeds.
The top eight doubles teams advanced to next week's Section VI Tournament, also at the Village Glen.
In the semifinals the Hollins sisters defeated East Aurora's No. 1 team of Grace Dunbar and Alaina Danieu, 6-2, 6-2. The East team moved on with a 6-2, 6-1 win over Clarence's top entrants, Holly Jalonek and Sarina Shaw.
Berardi leads Clarence boys soccer
Chris Berardi scored a minute into overtime as the Clarence boys soccer team edged Erie, Pa., power Cathedral Prep, 1-0. The Cathedral Prep goalie made the initial save and Berardi was there to drill the rebound into the net. Cathedral Prep entered the game undefeated in its last 14 games.
Clarence coach Mike Silverstein said the goalies on both sides made huge saves. The Red Devils' Hunter Hein had seven saves helping his team improve to 12-4 overall. Kenny May and Zach Zabel led the Red Devils' defense that tightened in the second half.
"It was a tale of two halves. The first half they kind of took it to us and then in the second we took control," said Silverstein. "We had a number of chances and couldn't finish and we finally won it in overtime."
Immaculata races to win in Akron
The Immaculata girls prevented a Section V sweep of the four varsity team titles at Saturday's 30th annual Clarence Fall Cross Country Classic at Akron Falls Park. The Bears won the small school girls race by a one-point margin over Greece Odyssey, 91-90. Hailey Gattuso of Mount St. Mary won the race in 21:05.5. Immaculata's top runner was Claire Attea, who was fifth.
Honeoye Falls-Lima won the boys and girls large school team titles while Aquinas was the small school boys winners.
Akron's Jeremy Rushok won the small school boys race in 16:52.8. Justin Bender of Clarence was the top local finisher in the large school boys race in 17:04.2. Livia Chase of Starpoint was third in the large school girls race.
St. Mary's boys net narrow victory
Frank Sardina was named MVP as the St. Mary's volleyball team rallied to win the Grand Island Tournament. The Lancers dropped the first game before beating Lockport, 17-25, 26-24, 26-24.
The Nichols girls tennis team did not beat Williamsville East this season, as was reported in Thursday's High School Extra. The teams did not play this season.
