Mass celebrates Guanella

St. Anthony Church, 160 Court St., will offer a Mass at 11:15 a.m. Sunday in honor of Blessed Luigi Guanella, an Italian priest who is scheduled to be canonized on Sunday by Pope Benedict XVI at the Vatican.

Guanella visited St. Anthony Church in 1913 as part of a journey to the United States on behalf of mentally challenged children.

Mass of Remembrance set

A Mass of Remembrance, with the Villa Maria Chorale as guest choir, will be held at 5:30 p.m. Nov. 5 in St. Adalbert Church, 212 St. Stanislaus St. A reception will follow.

Chorale to perform Sunday

The Canisius College Chorale, directed by Frank Scinta, will inaugurate its 2011-12 Sacred Spaces Concert Series with a performance at 7:30 p.m. Sunday in St. Andrew Catholic Church, 1526 Sheridan Drive, Town of Tonawanda.

The program is free and open to the public. It will feature works of Mendelssohn, Lotti, Lauridsen, Bernstein, Dawson and others.

Rabbi Pokras to be installed

Rabbi Gary E. Pokras will be installed as the 10th senior rabbi of Temple Beth Zion at a special Shabbat worship service at 7:30 p.m. Friday in the synagogue at 805 Delaware Ave.

Rabbi Lawrence Hoffman, professor of liturgy at Hebrew Union College and a leading Reform rabbi, will conduct the installation.

Pokras, a Connecticut native who was associate rabbi at Temple Beth Zion from 1999 to 2002, most recently served as senior rabbi of Temple Judea in Doylestown, Pa.

Kmiec celebrates anniversaries

Bishop Edward U. Kmiec will celebrate a Mass of Thanksgiving at 3 p.m. Oct. 30 in St. Joseph Cathedral, 50 Franklin St., marking the 50th anniversary of his ordination to the priesthood.

The Mass also will commemorate the seventh anniversary of his installation as bishop of Buffalo and his 29th anniversary of ordination as a bishop.

Cardinal Edward M. Egan, archbishop emeritus of the Archdiocese of New York, will be among the bishops from New York State and neighboring areas attending.

'Shepherd's Celebration Weekend'

Calvary Baptist Church, 1184 Genesee St., will celebrate the first anniversary of its pastor, the Rev. Quinton C. Foster, with a "Shepherd's Celebration Weekend" that will include a commemoration service at 10 a.m. Oct. 30.

The Rev. John F. Foster, pastor of City of Faith Church in Houston, will be guest preacher.

World Community Day celebrated

Church Women United of the Tonawandas will celebrate World Community Day at 1 p.m. Nov. 4 in Abiding Savior Lutheran Church, 1534 Ruie Road, North Tonawanda.

The theme is "Living Our Faith Unlocking Action," and the speaker is State Sen. George Maziarz, R-Newfane.
