Joseph A. Herberger, active in American Legion; April 15, 1921 -- Sept. 26, 2011

Joseph A. Herberger of East Amherst, a retired machinist and American Legion leader, died Monday in the Center for Hospice & Palliative Care, Cheektowaga. He was 90.

Born in Swormville, Mr. Herberger was a Navy veteran of World War II, serving in the South Pacific. He worked as a machinist for Niagara Machine & Tool Works for 42 years, retiring in 1983.

Mr. Herberger was a charter member and former commander of the A.J. Jurek Post 1672, American Legion; a former commander of the Erie County American Legion; and a former vice commander of the American Legion Department of New York.

Survivors include his wife of 63 years, the former Helen E. Faltisco; four daughters, Patricia Yost, Jean Jeremin, Barb Bass and Mary Graf; four sons, David, Charles, Robert and Andrew; two sisters, Dorothy Braunscheidel and Helen Jonson; and a brother, William.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be offered at 10 a.m. Saturday in St. Mary Catholic Church, 6919 Transit Road, Swormville.
