An uber-strong double bill will wrap this summer's Buffalo Place Rocks the Harbor series, as Newfoundland-born Celtic-rock outfit Great Big Sea is joined by one of the finest modern troubadours going, the iron-lunged soul-meister Martin Sexton, for a 6 p.m. show Saturday at the Erie Canal Harbor Central Wharf.
It's been a great year for both the free Thursday at the Square/Wharf and ticketed Rocks the Harbor shows, as intelligent booking and a resourceful use of prime waterfront space commingled to create a warm and welcoming concert vibe. The feel-good sea shanty-meets-Celtic throwdown that is Great Big Sea's specialty offers a fitting send-off.
Sexton is always a threat to blow the headliner off the stage when he plays first, and in terms of sheer originality, soulfulness and musicianship, the smart money's on him Saturday. But that's a mere quibble. With the addition of our own McCarthyizm opening the proceedings, this Rocks the Harbor finale can't miss.
Tickets are $10 in advance, and $20 on the day of the show (Buffalo Place, Ticketmaster).
