Kassian to get 'carded'

Zack Kassian is set to achieve that childhood mark of immortality: His face is going to be on a trading card.

Kassian is one of 27 NHL prospects who have been selected to participate in the 2011 NHL Players' Association Rookie Showcase next Tuesday near Toronto. The Sabres' first-round pick in 2009 will join notables such as Edmonton's Ryan Nugent-Hopkins and Washington's Cody Eakin in posing for Upper Deck, giving the trading card company an exclusive opportunity to photograph many of the game's top young prospects for the first time in their NHL uniforms. The shots will be used for upcoming trading card and memorabilia launches.


Thunderstorm delays Katz

Jake Katz of Williamsville was still on the course Tuesday when play was suspended because of darkness at the 111th U.S. Amateur Golf Championships in Erin Hills, Wis., The tournament was delayed 3 hours and 40 minutes earlier in the day because of a thunderstorm.

Katz, who shot a 1-over 71 Monday on the 6,667-yard Blue Mound Golf & Country Club, had not finished nine holes on the Erin Hills course on Tuesday.

The top 64 players in the field of 315 after two rounds of medal play qualify for match play starting today.


Niagara's MacKenzie resigns

Chris MacKenzie has resigned his position as the head coach of the Niagara women's hockey team to pursue a position within a professional hockey organization, the university announced Tuesday. Assistant coach Josh Sciba will be the interim head coach for 2011-12.

MacKenzie, who is a Niagara alumnus ('00) and former men's hockey standout, was 23-31-10 in two seasons at the helm.

University at Buffalo head wrestling coach Jim Beichner announced the hiring of new head assistant coach Matt Lackey, a 2003 NCAA national champion for Illinois.
