Man, 23, killed in Ontario when car crashes into tree

FORT ERIE, Ont. -- A 23-year-old man was killed early Saturday morning when he lost control of his car on Nigh Road and crashed into a tree, the Niagara Regional Police Service said.

The victim, whose name was not released by Canadian authorities at the request of his family, was driving his father's car when he crashed.

A patrol officer came across the single-crash accident at about 5:20 a.m.

Investigators said speed was a contributing factor in the accident.

The incident was under investigation.

Hiker breaks leg in fall at Chestnut Ridge Park

A 20-year-old man fell 50 feet while hiking on a cliff at Chestnut Ridge Park at about 7 p.m. Saturday, authorities said.

He was hiking out of the falls, near the Eternal Flame, when he lost his footing, authorities said.

Rescue crews brought the man to safety, then had him taken by Mercy Flight to Erie County Medical Center, where police said, he was being treated for a broken leg and other injuries.

The man's name was not released late Saturday night.

Woman robbed of Rolex, $4,000 in parking lot

A Hamburg woman reported to police that she was robbed of her Rolex watch and $4,000 in cash while she was in her car near Broadway and Bailey Avenue Thursday night, police said.

The victim said her car was in the parking lot of Avenue Pizza when two men she didn't know approached her and pointed a gun to her head.

She handed over her $6,000 watch and cash, police said.

Two men with gun rob two people downtown

Two people were robbed at gunpoint early Saturday morning in downtown Buffalo, police said.

The pair was at Washington Street, near West Mohawk Street, just after 3 a.m., when they were approached by two men, one of whom put a gun to the throat one of the victims, police said.

Downtown business robbed of $180, lottery tickets

A robber took cash and lottery tickets from a downtown business Saturday afternoon.

The incident happened just before noon at 438 Main St., where the suspect held the female clerk on the ground and took $180 cash from the register, according to police reports.

The robber also got away with 10 "Set for Life" scratch-offs from the New York State Lottery.

It was unclear if the suspect had a weapon. No other information was available Saturday night.

Clothing, computer taken from Elmwood Ave. store

Thieves broke into an Elmwood Avenue clothing store, causing damage and stealing more than $1,000 worth of merchandise, police said Saturday.

The burglary happened sometime late Friday night or early Saturday morning at Get Dressed, a store at 576 Elmwood Ave., according to police reports.

A plate glass window was broken to gain access, police said. Thieves stole more than $400 worth of clothing and took a computer valued at $600.

Man injured in driveway when car rams his vehicle

A man in the city's Grider neighborhood told police he suffered injuries Saturday morning when someone rammed into his car.

The Cornwall Avenue man told police he was parked in his driveway behind the wheel of his 2000 Lincoln just before 5 a.m. Saturday.

Another vehicle pulled into the driveway behind him and rammed the back of his Lincoln. The suspect did it twice more before fleeing the scene, police said.

The man suffered a knee injury, while his passenger suffered whiplash.

Laptop, recyclables stolen from Holy Cross

Someone entered Holy Cross Parish at 345 7th St. Thursday night by pushing in a window air conditioner on the north side of the building, according to police reports.

The thief took a laptop computer valued at $200. Bottles and cans for recycling were also taken.

$500 in medications taken from Falls home

NIAGARA FALLS -- About $500 worth of prescription medication was stolen from a Sixth Street home, police said.

The victim told police that someone entered her home via an open side window between 8 a.m. and 3 p.m. Thursday, stealing the medications from a tray.

Included in the missing medications were some hydrocodone tablets and Lidoderm patches.

Property worth $850 taken from Pendleton home

PENDLETON -- A burglar broke into a vacationing family's home and stole at least $850 worth of property, sheriff's deputies said. Two wallets and a PlayStation 3 game console were taken from the Pendale Circle home, deputies said.
