Man, 23, killed in Ontario when car crashes into tree

FORT ERIE, Ont. -- A 23-year-old man was killed early Saturday morning when he lost control of his car on Nigh Road and crashed into a tree, the Niagara Regional Police Service said.

The victim, whose name was not released by Canadian authorities at the request of his family, was driving his father's car when he crashed.

A patrol officer came across the single-crash accident at about 5:20 a.m.

Investigators said speed was a contributing factor in the accident.

The incident was under investigation.

Police looking for 2 cars involved in Falls shooting

NIAGARA FALLS -- Police are looking for two vehicles and at least three men who may have been involved in a shooting at the corner of Sixth Street and Walnut Avenue.

Neighbors reported seeing a passenger lean from a grey Buick and fire several shots, possibly in the direction of another car, just before 8 p.m. Friday. The suspect car then drove off down Sixth Street and eventually onto Ferry Avenue.

Police could find neither of the cars reported to have been involved.

Property worth $850 taken from Pendleton home

PENDLETON -- A burglar broke into a vacationing family's home on Friday and stole at least $850 worth of property, sheriff's deputies said.

The Pendale Circle residence was entered by breaking out a rear window, according to deputies, who said two wallets were stolen from bedrooms and a PlayStation 3 game console was taken from the basement.

Jailed man faces new charge after crack cocaine found

TOWN OF LOCKPORT -- Two hours after being arrested on an outstanding warrant, a Burt man was charged with promoting prison contraband after jail employees reportedly found a rock of crack cocaine inside his cigarette pack.

Carl G. Stiles, 30, of Ide Road, had been taken into custody around midnight Friday, sheriff's deputies said, and the narcotics were found during a search at the Niagara County Jail shortly after 2 a.m., according to reports.

Woman posing as aide steals TV from elderly man

NIAGARA FALLS -- Police say that a woman posing as an "aide" and stopping by an elderly man's apartment on occasion to offer "help" has instead been helping herself to his valuables.

The woman is seen on security cameras entering the handicapped man's Niagara Towers apartment around 5:45 a.m. Friday while he slept, police said. About 20 minutes later she is seen leaving the apartment carrying his television, valued at $600.

$500 in medications taken from Falls home

NIAGARA FALLS -- About $500 worth of prescription medication was stolen from a Sixth Street home, police said.

The victim told police that someone entered her home via an open side window between 8 a.m. and 3 p.m. Thursday, stealing the medications from a tray.

Included in the missing medications were some hydrocodone tablets and Lidoderm patches.

Police probing break-in at priest's residence

NIAGARA FALLS -- Police are investigating a break-in at the priest's chambers of St. Hagop Armenian Apostolic Church on Ninth Street.

Someone entered through a north window between Thursday afternoon and Friday morning, ransacking rooms and rummaging through file cabinets, drawers, cupboards and mail. An altar area was also damaged.

The only items known to have been taken were three 5-pound cans of coffee valued at $30, police said.

Unexploded firebomb found outside window

NIAGARA FALLS -- A Niagara Street man found an unexploded Molotov-cocktail-type firebomb outside his bedroom window Friday, hours after bricks had been thrown through two of his other windows, police said.

The man told police that he had had a confrontation earlier with a man who uses a vacant upper apartment in his building for "drugs and prostitution."

The landlord was called and the squatter was kicked out, according to reports.

On Friday, two of the victim's windows were broken, and later he found a glass bottle full of a yellowish, gasoline-smelling liquid outside his home, police said. There was a rag in the top of the bottle, which was confiscated by police for further investigation.

Woman robbed of Rolex, $4,000 in parking lot

A Hamburg woman reported to police that she was robbed of her Rolex watch and $4,000 in cash while she was in her car near Broadway and Bailey Avenue on Thursday night, police said.

The victim said her car was in the parking lot of Avenue Pizza when two men she didn't know approached her and pointed a gun to her head.

She handed over her $6,000 watch and cash, police said.
