DEC finds new evidence of emerald ash borer's wrath

The emerald ash beetle continues its destructive invasion of the Buffalo area, state environmental officials say.

A new infestation has been discovered in Cheektowaga and Lancaster, the Department of Environmental Conservation said.

The borer, which was found in Western New York in 2009, has killed tens of millions of trees in 15 states and two Canadian provinces.

Catholic Health teams up with Horizon for services

Catholic Health has teamed up with Horizon Health Services to provide help for women with behavioral problems at the M. Steven Piver Center for Women's Health and Wellness at Sisters Hospital.

Horizon's Maribeth H. Alaimo, a licensed medical social worker, will be available to see patients at the Piver Center and assess a variety of behavioral health concerns, including anxiety, postpartum issues, depression, grief and loss, and marital and parental problems.

She will provide limited counseling, along with referrals to one of Horizon's 13 locations. Horizon is the area's largest provider of mental health, substance abuse and primary medical services.

Oates, O'Nan will read from works, take questions

Authors Joyce Carol Oates and Stewart O'Nan will speak at Canisius College as part of its 2011 Contemporary Writers Series.

O'Nan, an awarding-winning fiction writer, will visit the campus at 7:30 p.m. Oct. 6 in the Grupp Fireside Lounge.

Oates, the prolific, world-renowned author from Lockport, will speak at 7:30 p.m. Oct. 24 in the Montante Cultural Center.

The events are free and open to the public.

The authors will read from their works at 7:30 p.m., followed by an audience question-and-answer period. Seating is limited.

The events will conclude with a reception and book-signing.

Convenience shop gets OK to add Dunkin' Donuts

The Grand Island Town Board approved a special-use permit and site plan to add a proposed Dunkin' Donuts location to an existing gas station and convenience store on Grand Island Boulevard.

The Dunkin' Donuts will adjoin S&G Express at 2024 Grand Island Blvd. Plans call for a drive-through lane, additional parking and landscaping. There will be an eating area outside and seating for 23 patrons inside. The facade will also get a makeover, to include fabric awnings and larger windows.

Power Authority to hold hearing on rate increase

LEWISTON -- The New York Power Authority will hold a public hearing at the Niagara Power Project on its proposed 29.5 percent rate increase for preference customers, including private utilities. The local hearing is set from 3 to 7 p.m. Sept. 20 in the Power Vista off Lewiston Road.
