Sylvester Kuligowski, Canisius High School teacher; Oct. 11, 1924 -- Aug. 17, 2011

A memorial service for Sylvester Kuligowski, a former Canisius High School teacher, will be held at 6 p.m. Monday in the Grontkowski Funeral Home in Nanticoke, Pa.

Mr. Kuligowski, 86, of the Town of Tonawanda, died Wednesday in Erie, Pa.

He was born in Nanticoke, Pa. A World War II veteran, he served in the Merchant Marines, earning the Atlantic War Zone Bar, the Victory Medal and the Mediterranean Middle East War Zone Bar.

He worked as a history and economics teacher, as well as a driver education instructor, at Canisius High School, from 1954 until his retirement in 1991.

Mr. Kuligowski was a member of the American Association of Woodturners and the Custer Battlefield Association.

Survivors include his companion, Emma Sue Cherico; a daughter, Karen Braun; a son, Kevin; a brother, Benjamin Kellogg; and a sister, Adeline Esposito.
