Winter in August

They just don't come any more legit than Johnny Winter. The man's electric blues pedigree is well beyond reproach. More significantly, his influence is everywhere today -- from the still vital world of blues and blues-based rock to the ever-burgeoning jam-band scene. Winter remains at the head of the blues guitar class.

A select few of the musicians Winter has held sway over -- among them Vince Gill, Warren Haynes, John Popper, Derek Trucks and Susan Tedeschi -- lent a hand in the making of Winter's new album, "Roots," due to drop on the Sony label Sept. 27. Fans might also want to check out the Winter "Live Bootleg" series, seven volumes of which are available for download via www.johnnywinter.net.

The ever-touring Winter and his band will perform at 8 p.m. Saturday in the Bear's Den in the Seneca Niagara Casino. Tickets start at $35 (Ticketmaster.com).
