University at Buffalo professor of history Erik R. Seeman, also a noted historian of the Americas, was named director of the UB College of Arts and Sciences' Humanities Institute, an association that has developed an international reputation for innovative cross-disciplinary research, teaching and community programs in the humanities. Seeman was appointed to a three-year term that began July 1.

Dr. Mark J. Lema, a professor and chairman of the Department of Anesthesiology, critical care and pain medicine and medical director of surgical services at Roswell Park Cancer Institute, will receive the American Society of Anesthesiologists Distinguished Service Award at the society's annual meeting Oct. 17. It is the highest award given by the society for meritorious service and achievement.

The accounting and business advisory firm Buffamante Whipple Buttafaro, named Justin M. Isaman a staff accountant in its Olean office. Isaman earned both a bachelor's and a master's degree from St. Bonaventure University.

Aftercare Nursing Services, a Cheektowaga licensed home care agency, appointed David Giordano director of waiver services. Giordano, a University at Buffalo graduate, also earned a master's degree from Buffalo State College and a Ph.D from UB.

This recognition means the firm has supplied a product the government can be confident in using. Auction Direct USA was named 2011 Independent Retailer of the Year by Auto Dealer Monthly magazine. This is the second consecutive year the company earned the award. Auction Direct USA consists of five stores: two in Victor, one each in Clarence, Raleigh, N.C., and Jacksonville, Fla.

Lexington Co-operative Market, a membership-based organization at 807 Elmwood Ave., recently celebrated 40 years in business with a 40 Fest Party that was open to the entire community. The Lexington Co-op was formed by members who wanted access to whole foods at reasonable prices. It has evolved from an entirely member-run organization to a fully functioning store with paid staff.

> Contributing

Five Star Bank presented a donation of $500 to GLOW YMCA during a ceremony at the bank's Batavia branch. The award is part of the bank's corporate charitable giving program, which focuses on children and education. The donation will be used to support the Challenger Sports program, which allows children with disabilities to participate in sporting activities throughout the year.
