Searcy power: Bills rookie Da'Norris Searcy cuts an imposing figure for a safety. Searcy, a fourth-round pick from North Carolina, is 5-foot-11, 217 pounds. He lifted 225 pounds 27 times in a row at the NFL Scouting Combine workouts in February. That was the most of any defensive back at the combine. An average strong safety makes about 15 to 17 repetitions.

Searcy hopes it will help in coverage. "I can dislodge from receivers because I have the upper-body strength to maneuver and get off blocks," he said.

The bench press, however, isn't why the Bills drafted Searcy.

"You don't see much bench-pressing on the football field," defensive backs coach George Catavolos said. "He's got good strength and good endurance. But he's got to carry it over to the football field. That's impressive. I'm not trying to belittle that. But we'll see on the field. He's a fine young man. We're looking for him to improve the next four games."

Sideline views: The defense did a good job of shutting down the run during Wednesday's night practice.

"I thought they dominated the first half of practice; they played well," said coach Chan Gailey.

Nick Barnett showed good speed in chasing down C.J. Spiller on a run around end. Shawne Merriman, Kyle Williams and Chris Kelsay had pressures. The offensive play of the night was a long completion out of the Wildcat formation from Brad Smith to Stevie Johnson, who made a fine leaping catch vs. Drayton Florence. Florence intercepted a pass down the sideline in the two-minute drill and tossed the ball into the stands. Most of the Bills' injured players returned to the field. Shawn Nelson (leg) and Torell Troup (hand) remained out. Roscoe Parrish re-tweaked a hamstring. Scott Chandler missed practice to be with his wife, who gave birth to their second child.

Directions: From Buffalo take the Thruway to Exit 47. Take Route 490 East for 25 miles to Exit 25 (Fairport Road -- 31F). Turn right or left and follow signs to fan parking. Shuttle buses take fans from the nearby lots to the practice fields. The lots are at Sutherland High School (55 Sutherland St.) and Mendon High School (472 Mendon Road), both near St. John Fisher.

Schedule: The Bills practice from 3:20 to 5:30 p.m. today. There is no practice Friday, when the team leaves for Chicago. The next camp practice is 7:30 to 9 p.m. Monday.
