West Side boats advance in Henley

The West Side Rowing Club had two boats racing in the medal round for gold and saw three of its boats advance to semifinals on day three of the 129th Royal Canadian Henley Regatta in St. Catharines, Ont.

Erin Wvlie, Puja Sztorc, Julia Hahn, Chelsea Maisan, Kayla Van Cleave, Megan Klyczek, Monica Klenk, Andre Muffoletto and coxswain Kate Ciminelli had the best finish of any West Side group so far with third place (7:32.11) in the under-23 lightweight women's eight final.

The only other final of the day was a fifth-place finish in the under-17 women's eight, in which the team of Mary Bridge, Heavyn Dreher, Emily Evans, Emily Radziwon, Coleen Kenney, Alexandra Gunner, Alexandra Nash, Catherine Greene and coxswain Zoey Binder finished at 7:53.83.

In the under-17 women's four with coxswain, West Side had three teams with two of them advancing to the semis for that event.

The only other event for West Side on Thursday was the under-23 men's pair. In the fifth heat of that event West Side took first and second place, with both boats advancing to the semifinals. The winning pair was Andre Sauvageao and Keith Pfirrman.


Katz leads BDGA men with a 70

Jake Katz paced the field at the 88th Buffalo District Golf Association's Men's Individual Championship with an opening round of 2-under 70 at Brookfield Country Club.

There is a four-way tie for second. Matt Stasiak (Fox Valley), Chris Covelli (Crag Burn), Kyle Gay (Brookfield) and Frank Garcia Jr., the 2000 champion of the event, were at 1-under 71.


Junior Sabres make Peca GM

The Buffalo Junior Sabres announced that former Sabres captain Michael Peca will become the organization's new general manager.

The hire allows for head coach and former Sabre Grant Ledyard to concentrate more on coaching and gives the squad another experienced staffer, said Larry Playfair, president of the Junior Sabres.
