Richard L. "Rock" Howard, a Vietnam War Army veteran and an active member of the labor union at General Motors for many years, died last Wednesday at his Buffalo home after a long illness. He was 66.
Born in Buffalo, he graduated from East High School.
Mr. Howard went to work at the General Motors Powertrain plant in the Town of Tonawanda in 1969 and worked there until his retirement in 2005. He served as a union steward for more than a decade and received the GM Excellence Award.
He enjoyed fishing, swimming, football and basketball.
Survivors include his wife of 25 years, the former Wanda L. Strong; a son, Rashad L.; three daughters, Rahsaan Norman and Ricarda and Niedeara Howard; two stepsons, Richard L. and former State Sen. Antoine M. Thompson; a brother, Davey Otis; and four sisters, Jackie Johnson, and Joann, Veronica and Darlene.
Friends may call at 10 a.m. today in True Bethel Baptist Church, 907 E. Ferry St., where a memorial service will be held at 11.
