Sister Marie Hughes, a teacher and principal at local diocesan elementary schools, died Sunday in Mercy Hospital. She was 80.
Born Marie Teresa Hughes in Buffalo, she was educated at Holy Family Elementary School and Mount Mercy Academy. She received her bachelor's degree in education from Mount St. Joseph Teachers College and her master's degree in business from Marywood College in Scranton, Pa.
A Sister of Mercy for more than 60 years, she entered the order Sept. 8, 1950, and professed her perpetual vows Aug. 29, 1956.
Sister Marie taught and was principal in many elementary schools in the Diocese of Buffalo. She also taught at Mount Mercy Academy.
She served as treasurer of Trocaire College and later was involved in the peace and justice movement in Western New York. She also was involved in parish ministry, especially in the area of liturgy.
Sister Marie is survived by three sisters, Sister Margaret Mary Hughes, Sister Ann Hughes and Theresa Healy.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be offered at 4 p.m. Thursday in the Mercy Center Chapel, 625 Abbott Road.
