Man ambushed by two robbed, shot on Byrd Way

A man was ambushed by two men who robbed and shot him early Wednesday morning as he was entering a residence on Byrd Way, between Jefferson Avenue and Hickory Street, according to Central District police.

After taking the victim's shorts, cash and cell phone at about 2:30 a.m., one of the robbers fired a shotgun, striking the man in the left and right calves, police said.

The wounds required treatment at Erie County Medical Center and the man was later released, according to police spokesman Michael J. DeGeorge.

Just four hours later, police were called to a nearby apartment on Byrd Way for the report of a man who was beaten with a handgun by three men who used a key to enter the apartment he shares with his mother, according to police reports.

The suspect was beaten on the head and suffered deep cuts and swelling. The assailants stole $400 cash from him along with $85 cash, a cell phone and bank card from his mother. They also cut the health monitoring cord to the woman's breathing machine.

It's unclear if the two incidents were related. Central District Police were investigating.
