Man faces sentencing Aug. 29 in sex case
LITTLE VALLEY -- A Conewango man faces sentencing Aug. 29 in Cattaraugus County Court after pleading guilty to sex crimes earlier this year.
Jason Bishop, 38, pleaded guilty to first-degree attempted criminal sexual act and first-degree sexual abuse between January and February in the Town of Conewango. The victim was younger than 11.
Pennsylvania man drowns off Ripley Beach
MAYVILLE -- A young man from Pennsylvania drowned at about 7:45 p.m. Tuesday while swimming with friends at Ripley Beach, according to the Chautauqua County Sheriff's Office.
Zachary D. Wadding, 18, of North East, Pa., and three friends had been jumping into Lake Erie from cliffs off Bauers Lane, deputies said. Shortly after jumping in, Wadding experienced difficulties and yelled for help. A friend who tried to help him ended up needing assistance getting out of the water, as well, deputies said.
Rough water and wind made for a difficult rescue, deputies said. Members of the Chautauqua County Water Emergency Team and the Sheriff's Navigation Patrol removed Wadding from the water.
Sentence awaited for break-in attempt
LITTLE VALLEY -- A Franklinville man being held in the county jail faces sentencing Aug. 29 in Cattaraugus County Court for a burglary attempt at the Franklinville High School on May 8.
Johnathen R. Wilcox, 18, has pleaded guilty to third-degree attempted burglary and third-degree criminal mischief before Judge Larry M. Himelein, who will impose the sentence.
East Randolph man charged with assault
EAST RANDOLPH -- A local man has been charged with assault following an incident Sunday that landed him in county jail.
James W. Warblow, 29, of Hall Street was arrested by Cattaraugus County sheriff's deputies about 10:30 p.m. on charges of third-degree assault and fourth-degree criminal mischief following the incident.
Following arraignment in Napoli Town Court, Warblow was taken to the county jail to appear in court at a later date.
Drug charges lodged against Salamanca woman
SALAMANCA -- A Highland Avenue woman was arrested on drug charges linked to an incident late Monday.
Courtney L. Bergstrom, 21, is charged with seventh-degree criminal possession of a controlled substance and criminal possession of a hypodermic instrument. Bergstrom was released to appear in City Court at a later date.
Falls man facing prison for drug sales in Olean
LITTLE VALLEY -- A Niagara Falls man faces up to two years in prison for drug sales in Olean following sentencing recently in Cattaraugus County Court.
Neal Hicks, 43, currently in Erie County Jail, was sentenced to two years in prison, two years of post-release supervision and restitution for his guilty plea to fifth-degree criminal sale of a controlled substance in November 2009.
Lie, stolen property lead to probation for man
LITTLE VALLEY -- A Machias man who lied to police and was in possession of stolen property has been sentenced in Cattaraugus County Court to probation.
Joseph D. Warters, 24, was sentenced to two concurrent terms of three years probation and 100 hours of community service for his guilty pleas to fifth-degree criminal possession of stolen property and making a punishable false written statement in May 2010 in the Town of Machias.
Man ambushed by two robbed, shot on Byrd Way
A man was ambushed by two men who robbed and shot him early Wednesday morning as he was entering a residence on Byrd Way, between Jefferson Avenue and Hickory Street, according to Central District police.
After taking the victim's shorts, cash and cell phone at about 2:30 a.m., one of the robbers fired a shotgun, striking the man in the left and right calves, police said.
The wounds required treatment at Erie County Medical Center and the man was later released, according to police spokesman Michael J. DeGeorge.
Just four hours later, police were called to a nearby apartment on Byrd Way for the report of a man who was beaten with a handgun by three men who used a key to enter the apartment he shares with his mother, according to police reports.
The suspect was beaten on the head and suffered deep cuts and swelling. The assailants stole $400 cash from him along with $85 cash, a cell phone and bank card from his mother. They also cut the health monitoring cord to the woman's breathing machine.
It's unclear if the two incidents were related. Central District Police were investigating.
