Surplus spurs Health Dept. to offer free pneumonia shots

OLEAN -- Due to an overstock of vaccine, the Cattaraugus County Health Department is offering free pneumonia shots through its Preventive Services Department until Friday.

The pneumococcal polysaccharide vaccine is recommend for anyone ages 19 to 64 who smokes or has asthma, age 65 and over with lung, heart, liver or kidney problems, or persons with other health problems such as diabetes. To schedule free vaccinations, call 701-3439.

Heritage Day features music, book sale, Conestoga wagon

PORTVILLE -- A book sale, vendors, live entertainment and special exhibits are planned for Portville's Heritage Day on July 9 at the Portville Library, 2 N. Main St.

The book sale, which starts at 9 a.m., features hardcover books for 50 cents and paperbacks for 25 cents. Movies and audio books also will be on sale.

Gloria Burton, Vic Walden and Roy Griffin will play old-time country favorites at 11 a.m., kicking off a day of live music. Vendors will sell food and other items on the front lawn.

The Portville Historical and Preservation Society's Conestoga wagon also will be on display. Books by famous naturalist John Muir will be on exhibit in the Pfeiffer Nature Center inside the library.

Buffalo River tours to begin 26th season on Fourth of July

The Industrial Heritage Committee begins its 26th season of Historic Buffalo River Tours on Monday, Independence Day. The tours provide a view from the water of grain elevators and other reminders of the city's industrial past.

The tour leaves at 12:30 p.m. from the Miss Buffalo dock at Erie Basin Marina. Other tours this summer will sail on July 16, Aug. 7 and Aug. 21. Tickets are $15 for adults, $10 for children aged 6 to 12. Youngsters age 5 and under are free. For reservations, call 856-6696.

Democratic Committee endorses Whyte, Schroeder

The Erie County Democratic Committee's executive committee on Monday endorsed Erie County Legislator Maria Whyte for Erie County clerk, and Assemblyman Mark Schroeder for City of Buffalo comptroller.

Whyte can expect to run against Christopher L. Jacobs, the Buffalo School Committee member who received the endorsement of the Erie County Republican executive committee June 18. There are no other announced candidates yet for comptroller.

Fundraiser will crown best salsa dancer in Buffalo

Copacabana Night Salsa will be held at 7 p.m. on Aug. 19 in the Buffalo Niagara Convention Center to benefit Hispanics United of Buffalo. It will include salsa dancing and a competition for the title of best salsa dancer in Buffalo.

VIP tickets are $100. General admission is $50. Tickets can be purchased at Hispanics United, 234 Virginia St., or online at www.hispunited.org.
