Collins honors two for Mideast missions

Two Erie County employees were honored by County Executive Chris Collins on Monday after completing missions for the Air Force in the Middle East.

Tech. Sgt. Michael Sluberski of the county Purchasing Department and Master Sgt. William Geary of the Public Works Department served missions with the 746th Expeditionary Airlift Squadron from the Niagara Falls Air Reserve Station. They were deployed March 8 and returned home June 4.

They flew aboard a C-130H2 Hercules Aircraft, accruing 185.4 combat flight hours, transporting 796 passengers, including military personnel and dignitaries, and carrying 189 tons of cargo to support troops, aides to Collins said.

The two sergeants also presented Collins with a U.S. flag that was with them on their aircraft over 10 countries.

Buffalo River tours to begin 26th season on Fourth of July

The Industrial Heritage Committee begins its 26th season of Historic Buffalo River Tours on Monday, Independence Day. The tours provide a view from the water of grain elevators and other reminders of the city's industrial past.

The tour leaves at 12:30 p.m. from the Miss Buffalo dock at Erie Basin Marina. Other tours this summer will sail on July 16, Aug. 7 and Aug. 21. Tickets are $15 for adults, $10 for children age 6 to 12. Youngsters age 5 and under are free. For reservations, call 856-6696.

Democratic Committee endorses Whyte, Schroeder

The Erie County Democratic Committee's executive committee Monday endorsed Erie County Legislator Maria Whyte for Erie County clerk and Assemblyman Mark Schroeder for City of Buffalo comptroller.

Whyte can expect to run against Christopher L. Jacobs, the Buffalo School Board member who was endorsed by the Erie County Republican executive committee June 18. There are no other announced candidates yet for comptroller.

Fundraiser will crown best salsa dancer in Buffalo

Copacabana Night Salsa will be held at 7 p.m. Aug. 19 in the Buffalo Niagara Convention Center to benefit Hispanics United of Buffalo. It will include salsa dancing and a competition for the title of best salsa dancer in Buffalo.

Hospital to offer program on living with diabetes

NIAGARA FALLS -- Niagara Falls Memorial Medical Center will begin a four-session diabetes program July 11.

The class, "Living With Diabetes," is recognized by the American Diabetes Association as meeting the national standards for diabetes self-management education and will take place from 1 to 3:30 p.m. in the Mary C.
