Independent Living of Niagara County will present American Sign Language Classes for children from 3 to 4 p.m., beginning July 11 through August 15, at the ILNC, 746 Portage Road, Niagara Falls. Western New York Independent Living is hosting its fourth annual ADA Consumer Picnic with food, fun and entertainment from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., July 26 at Sheridan Park, (Shelter No. 2) on Sheridan Drive and Grand Island Boulevard, adjacent to the Sheridan Park Golf Course, in the Town of Tonawanda. The picnic commemorates the Americans with Disabilities Act, a law passed on July 26, 1990, prohibiting discrimination on the basis of disability. Transportation is available. Independent Living of Niagara County is offering "Women to Women Empowerment," an encouragement and companionship support group for women with disabilities, from 1 to 2:30 p.m., Friday at 746 Portage Road, Niagara Falls. Topics include personal development, independent living skills, self-advocacy, communication skills, self-esteem and self-confidence, health and wellness. Western New York Independent Living Inc. offers a self-defense awareness group, specifically designed for personal protection and confidence-building for people with disabilities, at noon Friday in its facility located at 3108 Main St. The group will provide options to being mistreated and abused, address scenarios to avoid, tackle and control confrontation in realistic situations.
