Evelyn Bannan, Girl Scout leader, school secretary; April 30, 1924 -- June 22, 2011

Evelyn E. Bannan, of Hamburg, a Girl Scout leader and a secretary in West Seneca Central Schools, died Wednesday in the Center for Hospice & Palliative Care, Cheektowaga, after a long illness. She was 87.

Born Evelyn Derham in Toronto, she was a graduate of the High School of Commerce in Toronto and came to the Buffalo area in 1948.

Mrs. Bannan served as clerk to the West Seneca School Board and secretary to the assistant superintendent of West Seneca Schools from 1968 until she retired in 1987.

She was a Girl Scout troop leader in the West Seneca area for 10 years and then served on the Girl Scout Council of Buffalo and Erie County for another 10 years. She also was the treasurer of First Presbyterian Church of Gardenville and volunteered with Meals on Wheels.

Surviving are her husband of 68 years, Melville, and three daughters, Candace Sowyrda, Janice Frank and Maureen Daniel.

Services will be at 10 a.m. today in Lombardo Funeral Home, 3060 Abbott Road, Orchard Park.
