William L. Newell, retired Buffalo News pressman Dec. 28, 1942 -- June 7, 2011

A memorial service for William L. Newell of West Seneca, a retired pressman for The Buffalo News, will be at 7 p.m. Thursday in South Park United Presbyterian Church, 519 McKinley Parkway.

He died June 7 in the Erie County Home. He was 68.

Born and raised in South Buffalo, he attended Hutchinson-Central Technical High School. He began his career as a pressman with the Buffalo Courier-Express, where he served his apprenticeship. He transferred to The News in the late 1960s.

In 1982, Mr. Newell was assigned the lead journeyman position on The News' "Sunrise" edition. He remained in that position until his retirement in 1999.

Mr. Newell served many years as treasurer of Local 30, Graphic Communications International Union.

In 1992, he was inducted into the Hilary Park Figure Eight Hall of Fame. He was a member of a figure eight fast-pitch softball league.

He is survived by his wife of 31 years, the former Kay Roe; three sons, James, Christopher and Timothy; his mother, Helen; a brother, Robert; and a sister, Bonnie Marzolf.
