Cheektowaga schools discuss uniforms

A proposal to enhance the dress code in the Cheektowaga Central School District to include the use of school uniforms in the middle school received some support from the School Board on Tuesday night.

However, board members stopped short of mandating the change. After discussing the issue and conferring with the school district's attorney, the board made the decision in support of the initiative -- albeit with the understanding that the district is not changing its official policy.

"We're not changing the Code of Conduct," board member Brian Gould said.

Tuesday's decision by the board was prompted by an initiative at the middle school to promote school pride, according to Middle School Principal Brian Bridges, who said the idea was supported by "a lot of parents, teachers and now some students."

The board was not in complete agreement on its position. Board member Renee Wilson voted no when it came up for a vote.

In other business, the board will hold its annual organization meeting July 5.
