The University at Buffalo throwers had a big day at the Penn Relays as Becky O'Brien won the women's discus and Rob Golabek (Frontier) finished second in the men's shot put at the 117th annual event held at Philadelphia's Franklin Field.
O'Brien's throw of 173 feet, 1 inch won the event by 2 1/2 feet and was just two inches shy of her own school record. Golabek's winning throw was 62 feet, 7 3/4 , a half-inch shy of his own school mark.
Competition concludes today with Matt Gac and Evan Palmer entered in the college division of the men's hammer throw.
*Jessica Griffin hit a three-run homer in the first game and Holly Luciano and Alexandra Bejarano hit solo shotsin the second, but the University at Buffalo softball team dropped both games of a doubleheader to visiting Ohio University, 6-5, 8-4, in a Mid-American Conference East Division contests at Nan Harvey Field.
With the Bulls clinging to a 5-4 lead in the sixth the rain came in and the teams waited out a delay that lasted more than 1 hour, 20 minutes.
Once play resumed, Ohio scored the winning run in the seventh on a wild pitch.
In the second game, the Bobcats built a 5-0 lead through 3 1/2 innings. The Bulls got on the board in the bottom of the fourth as Bejarano rocked a home run to left field, pulling the Bulls within 5-1.
The Bulls scored another two runs in the bottom of the fifth.
Ohio scored another three runs in the top of the seventh to go up, 8-3. UB tacked on one run in the bottom of the seventh on Luciano's homer.
The Bulls begin a two-game series today against Akron at 2 p.m. The second game will be Sunday at 1 p.m.
