Marilyn R. Schlehr, a community volunteer and elementary school teacher, died Tuesday in her Williamsville home after a long battle with emphysema. She was 79.
The former Marilyn Mahoney was born in Buffalo and grew up on Portland Street in South Buffalo, graduating from St. Thomas Aquinas School and Mount Mercy Academy.
She earned a bachelor's degree in education from Buffalo State College, where she was a member of Sigma Sigma Sigma sorority, and taught third grade at School 56 in the Buffalo School District.
For more than a decade, she taught Christian confraternity doctrine at Christ the King Church School. She also served as president of the Women's Dental Guild and for many years instructed on oral hygiene to Head Start students in Buffalo elementary schools.
Survivors include her husband of 56 years, Cheektowaga dentist Frank J. Schlehr Sr.; two sons, Frank J. Jr. and James; and a daughter, Karen Schlehr Sealander; and a brother, Joseph.
A memorial Mass will be offered at 9:30 a.m. June 30 in Christ the King Catholic Church, 30 Lamarck Drive, Snyder.
