Joan Marie Newhouse, a longtime secretary and active churchwoman, died Thursday in her Amherst home. She was 85.
Born in Buffalo, the former Joan Marie Swartzenburg was a graduate of Mount St. Mary's Academy and Bryant & Stratton Business Institute. She worked as a secretary for the comptroller of the Buffalo Public School District in the late 1940s and early 1950s. During World War II, she was the secretary for a lieutenant commander who was inspector of Naval material.
Mrs. Newhouse also served as secretary for the Mothers Club at St. Margaret's School in North Buffalo and Catholic Charities at Holy Spirit Church near Hertel Avenue, as well as on many committees at Christ the King School in Snyder.
She was a co-leader of Girl Scout Troop 1029 and a member of the board of St. Joseph's Collegiate Institute. Mrs. Newhouse was an honorary citizen of Girls and Boys Town in Nebraska, a nonprofit agency that cares for children in Boys Town, Neb.
She is survived by her husband of 61 years, Howard E.; two sons, James and John; and a daughter, Anne Marie.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be offered at 11 a.m. Tuesday in Christ the King Church, 30 Lamarck Drive, Snyder.
