A pair of spectacular documentaries that explore the worlds about us, "Human Planet" and "The Universe: The Complete Series Megaset," top the list of this week's new releases.
"Human Planet" ($39.98 DVD, 49.98 Blu-ray; BBC) is a marvelous look at this world of ours and the people who inhabit it. The project took four years to make and was filmed in more than 70 locations while weaving together 80 stories.
The series travels from Greenland to Mongolia, Cambodia to Kenya and beyond. The three-disc set includes eight episodes. They include "Oceans," "Deserts," "Arctic," "Jungles," "Mountains," "Grasslands," "Rivers" and "Cities."
This series will give you a greater appreciation of the wonders of our Earth.
The set includes "Behind the Lens," a set of 10 ten-minute making-of featurettes (one at the end of each episode) and two bonus featurettes, plus a BD-Live extra. It is highly recommended.
"The Universe: The Complete Series Megaset" ($99.95 DVD, $179.95; A&E Home Video), which takes us on exciting trips to the planets and beyond, now is available in its full glory. It's a dazzling parade of high-def images.
The 16-disc Blu-ray set contains all 64 episodes from the five seasons, plus numerous extras including a feature-length documentary and featurettes on such topics as meteors and comets. The DVD set has 14 discs plus extras.
