Buffalo native Doug McAvinn, a 1970 graduate of Kenmore East, has been selected for the USA Gymnastics Region 8 Hall of Fame. McAvinn is currently a University of Georgia assistant gymnastics coach. In his 26 seasons, McAvinn has been instrumental in leading the Bulldogs to 10 NCAA titles.

Along with coaching six individual national vaulting champions, McAvinn helped produce 62 vaulting All-Americans. He signed with Georgia Southern University out of Kenmore East. He began coaching one of the first private gymnastics clubs in the state of Georgia in 1974.

He will be joined by four others in the Class of 2011 at the July 16 induction in New Orleans.

The Super Senior Women's 8.0 Tennis Team from Western New York that won the Eastern Regionals and Sectionals Championships ran into some tough times in the National Team Championships that were held from April 15-17 in Surprise, Arizona.

There were 16 teams that were divided into four team flights. The WNY team lost three matches in their flight to finish fourth in their flight. Unfortunately, they could not advance further due to their losses.

Team members consisted of Captain Sumi Spahn, Co-Captain Andrea Abels, Maureen Brown, Carol Matson, Geraldine Neff, Dian Peschio, Diana Sachs, Ann Swan, Fulvia Tessyman, and Merilyn Webster.

"We had a great time, team captain Spahn said. "However, we were at a severe handicap because we have been playing indoors all year aand it was the first time that we had played outside."

BASEBALL: ECC will host a four-day camp for players in grades 1-12 from July 11-14. ECC head coach Joe Bauth will direct in conjuction with U.S. Baseball Academy. Each session will last three hours, and cover hitting, pitching, fielding, and baserunning. Cost is $16 per hour. Register at www.usbaseballacademy.com or call (866) 622-4487.

BASKETBALL: The Miguel Respress "Future Stars" Basketball League is registering teams for their six-week youth basketball league which starts on May 21 at McCarthy Park. Games are played on Saturdays from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. for six weeks. Teams are divided into three age divisions: 6-8, 9-11 and 12-14. To register a team or an individual boy or girl, please contact Maurice at 602-1326 or Dedric at 597-2987. Cost is $200 per team. Registration deadline May 11th. Local businesses and organizations are encouraged to enter a team. Voluteer coaches needed. No AAU teams please. The Gloria J. Parks Community Center, 3242 Main St., Buffalo, will host the Wendy's Summer High School Basketball League. Fees are $325 per team and includes all fees and shirts. All divisions (Boys 7th and 8th grade, boys JV, boys varsity, girls JV and girls varsity) will begin the week of June 13 Bishop Timon/St. Jude High School is looking for two more teams for its Monday summer basketball league. RUNNING: The Lou Reuter/Brian Dugan Memorial Scholarship Run will be held May 7, beginning at Kenmore East High School, 350 Fries Road, Tonawanda. The 5K run begins at 10:30 a.m. Cost is $20 for adults and $10 for students. Register at buffalorunners.com or signmeup.com. Call 874-8402 or 874-8401.
