Former Pioneer High School Principal Sharon Huff has been appointed superintendent of the Pioneer Central School District.
Huff left Pioneer to become assistant superintendent, and later superintendent, at Cleveland Hill School District in mid-2007.
She will begin her new duties at Pioneer on July 1.
The School Board, which appointed her last Tuesday, said in a statement that Huff "has extensive knowledge of curriculum and instruction, assessment practices and the reform initiatives that will become the focus of the next decade." Board members also said colleagues and students describe Huff as "respectful, approachable as well as accessible" and said she is a good listener.
The search for a superintendent began last fall after Jeffrey Bowen announced his retirement, to take effect June 30. The board hired Syracuse-based education consultants Castallo & Silky for the search process.
A districtwide survey gathered public input on the desired qualities of a new superintendent. Committees of students, faculty, support staff, administrators, parents, community members and the Board of Education helped narrow the field of candidates.
Huff will be the sixth permanent superintendent in the 45-year history of the Pioneer School District and the first woman.
