Airport snow removal earns regional honor
Buffalo Niagara International Airport has been honored by the American Association of Airport Executives for its snow removal efforts at the group's recent meeting in Buffalo.
The group's Northeast Chapter presented the Balchen/Post Award for Outstanding Achievement to the Niagara Frontier Transportation Authority, the airport operator. The award recognizes the airport's snow removal team with a first-place citation in the category of medium-sized commercial airports.
It marks the sixth time in the award's 35-year history that the Buffalo airport has received the recognition.
The organization's selection committee considered a number of factors, including clearing ice and snow from runways, equipment readiness, personnel training and safety awareness.
NFTA Executive Director Kimberley A. Minkel said that in spite of 111 inches of snow recorded at the airport over the winter, runways were never closed.
"This speaks volumes about the dedication and ability of our airfield personnel who work around the clock, including being away from their families on holidays and missing family functions, while working to maintain our runways," Minkel said.

Town begins collecting residents' grass clippings
The Cheektowaga Sanitation Department has begun collecting grass clippings from town residences.
The debris should be in a hard, open-top container, or a biodegradable bag. Branches should be tied and bundled, less than four feet long and less than 40 pounds.
Mattresses and box springs are considered trash and should be left at the curb with regular weekly trash. Brochures with more details will be mailed to residents this month. If a copy does not arrive, call the department at 686-3426.
