JOHNS - John A. "Jack"
73, of Cedar Falls, IA, died Wednesday, April 20, 2011 at the Cedar Valley Hospice Home, Waterloo, Iowa. He was born December 26, 1937 in Du Bois, Pennsylvania, son of Challis and Kathryn (Jones) Johns. He married Priscilla Webster on November 22, 1958 in Buffalo, New York. He served in the United States Marine Corps from 1955 to 1958. He attended the University of Buffalo and was employed with the Wales Strippit Company subsidiary of the Houdaille Industries Inc., serving as Project Engineer, moving on to Chief Manufacturing Engineer, and later promoted to Factory Manager. He moved to Cedar Falls, Iowa in 1986, as President of Viking Pump. He served as Group Executive and later became Chief Operating Officer of the IDEX Corp in Chicago, retiring from the corporation in 1994. He was active in the Foundation Fighting Blindness in Maryland and founded an FFB support group in Iowa. He was the original chairman of the advisory board for the Center of Macular Degeneration at the University of Iowa, which is now developed into the University of Iowa
Institute for Vision Research. Survived by his wife, Priscilla; a son, Richard (Marina) of Orlando, FL; two daughters, Kimberlee Johns of Atlanta, GA and Tracy Johns of Cedar Falls; three grandchildren, Alberto, Priscilla and Richard "R.J" Johns; and a sister, Patricia Pochopin of Naples, FL. Preceded in death by his parents. Family will receive friends from 4 to 5 p.m. Saturday at the RICHRADSON FUNERAL HOME, Cedar Falls.
