Daniel C. Austin, of Buffalo, president of his union at the E.I. du Pont de Nemours plant in the Town of Tonawanda, died Wednesday in the Center for Hospice & Palliative Care, Cheektowaga, after a long illness. He was 63.
Born in Buffalo, he was a graduate of Riverside High School and served in the Air Force from 1966 to 1971.
A millwright at DuPont, Mr. Austin served as president of what is now Local 6992, United Steelworkers, from 1996 to 2000 and again from 2006 until his retirement in 2009. He negotiated the current union contract at DuPont and negotiated the largest National Labor Relations Board settlement in this region for illegal layoffs at DuPont. He also was a volunteer firefighter for DuPont.
He was a longtime member of the George Washington Fishing and Camping Club, for which he organized a number of annual charitable fundraising events. He also served on the board of directors of the Frontier Federal Credit Union and was vice president at the time of his death.
Surviving are his wife, the former Dorothy Pawelski; a son, Daniel; a daughter, Denise DiTondo; and three brothers, Robert, Charles and Timothy.
A memorial service will be at 4 p.m. Saturday in Kenmore United Methodist Church, 32 Landers Road, Kenmore.
