John Uplinger was paralyzed in both legs after a motorcycle accident on the New York Thruway in 2003.
Eight years later, Uplinger raised a championship trophy in triumph after helping the Buffalo Sabres team to the Adult Division championship of the New England Invitational Sled Hockey Tournament in Westfield, Mass.
"There was a time after the accident when they thought I wasn't going to make it, but I'm alive and I'm playing hockey. I love it," Uplinger, 44, told sports columnist Garry Brown of the Springfield Republican.
The Sabres, who are sponsored and encouraged by the Buffalo Sabres of the NHL, won the championshp with a 5-4 overtime decision against the Northeast Passage Wildcats, sponsored by the University of New Hampshire. Jeff DeGlopper had the winning goal for Buffalo.
The Sabres also won the Junior Division, winning on a shootout goal by Jared Cutler against the Virtua Wings of Steel from Voorhees, N.J., 3-2.
