Agency plans fundraiser to provide shelter to families

"Shelter From the Storm," a celebration and fundraiser for Family Promise of Western New York, will be held 6 to 8 p.m. April 28 in Salvatore's Italian Gardens, 6461 Transit Road, Depew.

Family Promise, the local affiliate of a national organization, provides shelter for families experiencing homelessness and helps keep them intact. As an interfaith network of local congregations, the agency depends on volunteers to host children and parents and provide a compassionate environment.

The April 28 event will recognize agency history and recent service achievements, and include "Gimme Shelter," a performance by the Academy of Theatre Arts. For info and reservations, call Jessica Miller at 821-9100.

Joy will run unopposed for 5-year School Board term

FREDONIA -- There is only one candidate for the single five-year seat on the Fredonia Central School District Board of Education. Rosie Joy, the incumbent, will be running unopposed for her second term of office.

Voting for the School Board candidate and the district's proposed $27 million school budget for 2011-2012 will take place from 2 to 9 p.m. on May 17 in the high school cafeteria.

Rotary International head to speak at Centennial Gala

For the first time in 25 years, Buffalo will host a visit from the president of Rotary International, who is coming to help the Rotary Club of Buffalo celebrate its 100th anniversary on April 28.

Ray Klinginsmith, an attorney from Kirksville, Mo., will be guest speaker at the club's Centennial Gala that evening in the Hyatt Regency Buffalo.

First, at 2 p.m., he will visit Rotary Park at the foot of Porter Avenue for the unveiling of a sculpture and sign at its entrance. Rotary contributed $500,000 toward construction of the Frank Lloyd Wright Fontana Boathouse for the West Side Rowing Club.

HOME plans awards dinner to celebrate anniversary

Housing Opportunities Made Equal, the region's largest fair housing group, will celebrate its 48th anniversary with a dinner at 5 p.m. April 28 in the Buffalo Niagara Convention Center.

The dinner will feature awards, stories about people the organization has assisted and an update on its new home at West Ferry and Main streets.
