Purple Eagles get win
In the USA Hockey Tier II 14-and-under championships at the Northtown Center at Amherst, the Niagara Jr. Purple Eagles earned a 5-2 win over Alaska. Mathew Paonessa and Ryan Ball each had a goal and an assist in the win.
Paonessa tied the game at 2-2 in the second period and then assisted on Sean Martin's game-winning goal later in the period. Joeseph DeMunda and Justin Nichols also scored for Niagara, which faces CHC Rampage of Colorado at 9:15 a.m. today. The winner will advance to Saturday's playoffs.
Elsewhere, the Buffalo Regals 18-and-under team fell to 0-2 at the USA Hockey Tier I Championships in Simsbury, Conn., following a 3-1 loss to fellow Tier I Elite League rival Detroit Honeybaked. David Powlowski had the lone goal for the Regals.
The Regals held a 35-25 edge in shots. The Regals face Shattuck's St. Mary's tonight at 8:30 needing a win to keep their slim hopes of advancing out of pool play alive.
In the 16-and-under Tier I tournament, the Regals fell to 1-1 after a 5-3 loss to Honeybaked. Noah Batis, Kyle Eastman and Justin Bailey scored for Buffalo, who play Shattuck's St. Mary's at 1:15 p.m. today.
Federer, Sharapova advance
Roger Federer advanced to the semifinals of the Sony Ericsson Open in Key Biscayne, Fla. when Gilles Simon retired with a stiff neck after losing the first three games. He will face No. 1 Rafael Nadal, who beat Tomas Berdych in three sets, in the semis.
Maria Sharapova became the first women's finalist, beating Andrea Petkovic, 3-6, 6-0, 6-2.
