SHELDON, Donald R.
SHELDON - Donald R. Age 80, formerly of 125 Independence St., Selinsgrove, PA and Arlington, VA, March 31, 2011 at RiverWoods following a lengthy illness. He was born January 17, 1931 in Binghamton, NY, a son of the late Gerald L. and Merna (Russell) Sheldon. On May 30, 1953, he married the former Mary Ellen Rowe, who preceded him in death on May 28, 2000. Don was a graduate of Midwood High School, Brooklyn, NY. He received his Bachelor of Arts from Susquehanna University in 1953. He received his Masters Degree in 1954 from Hofstra University, sharing the event with his mother, who received her degree on the same date. He was awarded his PhD in microbiology by Purdue University in 1960. He served in the US Army from 1954-56. He had a lifetime of government service, working in the Washington, DC area for the Central Intelligency Agency; The Institute for Defense Analyses; The Executive Office of the President, Office of Science and Technology, and the Drug Enforcement Administration. Following his retirement in 1988, Don moved to Selinsgrove, where he resided until he moved to RiverWoods, Lewisburg, in July 2010. Don was active in community affairs, serving for many years on the Selinsgrove Borough Council, where he served a term as council president. He was a member of the Shamokin Dam Lions Club, the DH&L "Hookies", the Selinsgrove Chamber of Commerce, and the Susquehanna Valley Country Club. He enjoyed attending the Susquehanna University football games and other campus events. He was an avid follower of the New York sports teams and the Washington Redskins. Don and Mary Ellen enjoyed their visits to foreign countries, and both were excellent cooks. Both enjoyed cooking recipes learned on their travels and loved to entertain. Donald is survived by one son, Gerald R. Sheldon, of Selinsgrove; one daughter and son-in-law, Elizabeth and Glenn Cooley, of Fairfax, VA; one grandson, Chris Cooley of Fairfax, VA; and two granddaughters, Leslie (Cooley) and Jimmie Merrit, of College Park, MD, and Amanda and Jason Kraft of North Tonawanda, NY; and one great-granddaughter, Kaylee Kraft. There will be no viewing. The memorial service will be private. Burial will be in the Salem (Rowe's) Church Cemetery at the convenience of the family. Funeral arrangements are under the direction of the V.L. SEEBOLD FUNERAL HOME, Selinsgrove. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that contributions in Don's memory be made to Evangelical Community Hospital Hospice, One Hospital Drive, Lewisburg, PA 17837.
