BURDEN, Cecelia

BURDEN - Cecelia Passed away on March 21, 2011 in hospice in Athens, GA. Cecelia is survived by her husband and loving caregiver, William Burden, her sons Robert and Jeffrey, grandson Amit Dasgupta, and her daughter and son-in-law Mary Ellen and Bob Quinn. Cecelia is also survived by her brother Dr. J.G. Haar and wife Jean, of Buffalo, NY; her sister Mrs. Mary Arnold of Jacksonville, FL; and many special nieces and nephews. Cecelia was preceded in death by her parents, Emile and Agnes (Conklin) Haar, and her son William Burden. Born in Rochester, NY, Cecelia moved to Williamsville with her family and graduated from Newman High School. Cecelia received her RN from Sisters of Charity Hospital, her BSN from the University of Buffalo, and a Masters Degree from the University of North Florida. Mrs. Burden built a remarkable nursing career dating back to her years as a World War II nursing cadet and training at Memorial Sloan Kettering. Her work in public health administration included United Cerebral Palsy where she was instrumental in developing the grant that led to the founding of the nationally recognized Early Childhood Development Center in Atlanta, GA, as well as leadership positions in the Jacksonville, FL and State of Florida Public Health Departments. In her later years Cecelia spent a great deal of time in China, traveling the world with her husband as well as doing advocacy work for the underserved with AARP and China's largest hospital in Shanghai. Of all her accomplishments it was her family that was her greatest joy. In addition to joyfully raising her four children and being a happy grandmother to Amit, Cecelia was a mother figure to many. She seemed to know when someone needed her care and concern, and her unconditional love and serene, compassionate nature will be remembered by all that knew her. Cecelia will be missed by her large and loving family that she brought together in life and will forever watch over in death. A funeral mass will be held at the University of Georgia Catholic Center in Athens, GA on April 2, 2011 at 11:00 AM. Mrs. Burden asked that in lieu of flowers please make donations to your favorite charity or the Sulzbacher Center, Jacksonville, FL. LORD & STEPHENS FUNERAL HOMES - West Chapel, 706-549-3342.
