Sister Mary Paul Illig, a member of the Sisters of Mercy who taught in Buffalo Catholic diocesan schools for 32 years, died Thursday in Mercy Hospital. She was 87.
Born in Jamestown, the former Virginia May Illig traveled to Washington, D.C., where she worked as a secretary for six years before entering the Sisters of Mercy in 1948. She professed her perpetual vows in 1954.
Sister Mary Paul's religious life was spent in the field of education in schools throughout the diocese. In addition to many years teaching, she also served as an assistant principal at Our Lady of Mercy School in Orchard Park. She then served as secretary to the Sisters of Mercy Administration.
After her retirement, she assisted the convent at Mercy Center and served in the prayer ministry of the community.
She is survived by a sister, Sister Mary Andrea Illig.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be offered at 4 p.m. Monday in Mercy Center Chapel at the Mercy Convent, 625 Abbott Road.
