Area team wins Tri-Level title

Jennifer Ickowski, Maria Lapetina, and Smaranda Stan won four matches at the 4.5 level to win the recent Tri-Level National Women's Team Tennis Championships in Indian Wells, Calif.

The Tri Level Championships are unique in that the team consists of 3.5, 4.0, and 4.5 players, each in their own division.

The 3.5 team finished 5th out of 16 teams. The 3.5 Team members included Ann D'Aquino, Megan Golliwtzer, and Christy Walsh. 4.0 Team members included Rowena Deperio, Maryann Grande, Nancy Rehak, and Carol Salvatore. Steve Beatty is the team captain.

Bandits' playoff prices set

The Buffalo Bandits have announced ticket prices for the National Lacrosse League playoffs. The Eastern Division semifinals will take place the weekend of April 29-May 1, division finals the weekend of May 6-8 and the Champion's Cup final the weekend of May 13-15.

Prices for season ticket holders will range from $20-39 depending on seating level and round. Season tickets holders must make their payment by April 16. Box office prices will be from $27-46.

*Cory Conacher, one of the most decorated players in Canisius hockey history, signed a contract with the Rochester Americans of the AHL, while Vincent Scarsella signed with the Elmira Jackals of the ECHL. Conacher -- who set 12 career, single-season and single-game records for the Canisius program -- is the Canisius all-time leading scorer in Division I. Scarsella, a Lackawanna native, appeared in a school record 144 games for the Griffs.

*John Lomax III, the man who fatally stabbed University of Connecticut football player Jasper Howard during an on-campus fight in 2009 tearfully apologized to Howard's family Friday as he was sentenced to 18 years in prison.

*Defending champion Kim Clijsters needed only 50 minutes to win her opening match at the Sony Ericsson Open in Key Biscayne, Fla., beating Anastasiya Yakimova, 6-1, 6-1.
