Marrano/Marc Equity, a locally owned home builder in Western New York, appointed Deborah Okun a new-home construction professional, responsible for sales and coordination of the new-home building process. Previously, Okun was regional sales manager for an area home builder for more than 12 years.

The law firm Akin Gump Strauss Hauer & Feld in Washington, D.C., promoted Buffalo-area native Deborah Newman to partner. Newman is a member of the firm's litigation practice. A University of Michigan graduate, she obtained her J.D. from Columbia Law School.

Building Controls and Services named Frank Strnad a building automation systems technician in its City of Tonawanda office. Strnad graduated from Buffalo State College and has an associate's degree from Erie Community College South. The company also named Dennis Schultz a sales account executive in its Falconer office. Schultz is also a Buffalo State graduate.

Meals on Wheels for Western New York, a nonprofit organization that provides delivered nutrition programs to the homebound, appointed James W. Ingham chief financial officer and Francine M. Powers director of operations. Ingham, a certified public accountant, is a University at Buffalo graduate and holds an MBA from Canisius College. He most recently served as vice president of finance and administration at Mentholatum in Orchard Park. Powers, also a UB graduate, has more than 20 years of experience in the retail and food service industry.

Phillips Lytle partner John C. Spitzmiller served as a guest speaker at a recent event hosted by the Estate Analysts of Western New York. Spitzmiller's presentation was titled, "2010 Tax Relief Act, Estate Gift and Generation Skipping Transfer Tax."

The Child Advocacy Center of Niagara, a service of Niagara Falls Memorial Medical Center, was awarded a $27,620 grant by the National Children's Alliance to enhance the quality of investigations into alleged child abuse and child neglect. The grant will allow four individuals who are part of the child-abuse response in Niagara County to attend specialized training. It also will allow the center to install soundproofing materials and language translation services, including American Sign Language.

Empire Distributing, a distribution company that supplies Hearth products and accessories, has retained R.W. Miller Jr. & Associates, a human resource and management consulting firm, to provide assistance in revising and updating its employee handbook.

Ann Taylor LOFT Outlet and the Uniform Outlet recently opened at the Fashion Outlets of Niagara Falls USA, raising the total of new, moved or renovated stores to more than 75 of the 150 designer-brand stores.

Buffalo Exterminating of Orchard Park was named one of the 200 Top Guns by Pest Management Professional, a trade magazine for pest-control professionals. The company was ranked No. 123 among 200 companies from around the world based on sales revenues from residential and commercial customers in the December 2010 issue of the magazine.
