The 10th Annual Athletes In Action Call to Courage Award Breakfast will be held on April 9 at 9 a.m. in the Hyatt Regency Hote,l and five WNY high school student-athletes are finalists for the Call to Courage Leadership Award.

Senior Joe Parrott, quarterback from Wilson; junior Max Russell, defensive and offensive lineman from Newfane; senior MacKenzie Ward, defensive back from Clarence; senior Jason Forshee, offensive and defensive lineman from Springville; and senior Shayne Daley, wide receiver and defensive back from Lackawanna.

Bills head coach Chan Gailey will host and former Bills London Fletcher, Frank Reich, Steve Tasker and Pete Metzelaars will be in attendence. Tickets are $40 or $350 for a table of ten; call 559-1800.


Calling all camps!

The Buffalo News plans to run its annual directory of summer camps in the WNY area in April. BASEBALL: Current summer players ages 9 through 13 can extend the season through the fall with Team New Era Fall Elite travel leagues. All tryouts will be held at New Era Park, 3950 Broadway, Depew. Interested candidates can attend one or both tryout sessions. Visit or contact New Era Park at 681-3001.

BASKETBALL: The Gloria J. Parks Community Center will hold the Phil Scaffidi Memorial Basketball Tournament April 8-10 for boys and girls 10 and under and April 15-17 for boys and girls 14 and under. Entry is $150 per team and is double elimination. To register call Kevin Feguson at 832-1010.

BOATING: The Buffalo Launch Club's Boater's Seminar and Luncheon will take place from 9:30 a.m.-1 p.m. April 9. Nine marine law enforcement organizations will be on-hand to field questions. The event will conclude with a buffet lunch and the availability to speak with various officers one-on-one. The cost is $15. Contact the Buffalo Launch Club at 773-7629.

FUNDRAISER: There will be a fundraiser to benefit high school football official Dick Schwede on April 4 from 7-11 p.m. at Ilio DiPaolo's Restaurant in Blasdell. This is a tribute to Schwede, who celebrated his 40th season in 2010, and for the past 15 years has been the President of the WNY Chapter of Certified Football Officials Association. Tickets are $30 and include open bar, pizza, wings, roast beef and snacks. A drawing of premier gift baskets will be held at halftime of the NCAA basketball championship. GOLF: Pro Golf Discount and the Town of Tonawanda will host Demo Fest 2011 on Saturday from 10 a.m.-5 p.m. and Sunday 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Paddock Chevrolet Golf Dome, 175 Brompton Road, Tonawanda. The event is free. Call 834-0521. The Buffalo Women's Golf Club is sponsoring a golf outing to benefit Cornerstone Manor, the Women's and Children's division of the Buffalo City Mission. It will be held on July 29 at Arrowhead Golf Course in Akron. The $110 fee includes 18 holes of golf, cart, lunch, dinner, games, and prizes. Registration will begin at 10:30 a.m., with lunch at 11:30, and a shotgun start at 12:30. Dinner will follow the event. Contact Nancy McKenzie at 693-5132.

HOCKEY: The Buffalo Stars Hockey Club will hold open scrimmage tryouts for players born between 1991-96 from 4-6 p.m. on April 4, 8:45-10:30 p.m. on April 6; 7:15-8:45 p.m. on April 13, 7:45-9:15 p.m. on April 20 and 7:45-9:15 p.m. on April 27. YOUTH FOOTBALL: Lancaster Junior Redskins Football and Cheerleading recently elected new members of the Board. Newly elected to the board were Joe Molea, Carlo Direnzo, Mary Pat Mahoney, Tracy Harmon and James Purpura. Re-elected to the board were Tim Gekas, Drew Pella, Diane Sagliani, Lisa Zajac and Jennifer Molea. Remaining on the board are Scott Meyers, Lynne Martin, Keith Monin, Paul Lapiana, Michelle Mycek and Tricia Jachimiak.
