Who?: Kenmore East High School roots-music combo comprised of students Ian Boswell (vocals), Ailsa Prohn (banjo, vocals), Jaqui Harning (violin), Tim Valint (violin), Joshua Kluge (bass), Alec Safy (bass) and Ken East biology teacher Joe Allen (guitar, vocals).
What?: Winner of this year's Music Is Art Battle of the Bands. The group was invited to perform as part of MIA's "Big Easy in Buffalo Mardi Gras Jam" at the Tralf Music Hall earlier this month. The gang was also treated to a preconcert private session with headliner and Cajun blues legend Tab Benoit. Heady stuff for high schoolers!
Why?: Because this is what it's all about. That high school students in the Northeast would even be interested in the rich tradition of bluegrass and roots music is thrilling. That they'd have the blend of passion, chops and discipline necessary to be able to perform it well -- that's simply wonderful.
