Bisons drop first spring training game

JUPITER, Fla. The Buffalo Bisons began spring training with a 5-4 loss Thursday to the New Orleans Zephyrs.

The opener marked the first of 13 games Buffalo will play before trekking north for the season opener.

In defeat, Bisons pitcher Josh Stinson threw three scoreless innings. The 23-year-old righty went 2-2 a year ago with a 2.57 ERA in four starts. Also in the loss, Valentino Pascucci, a former Zephyr, went 1 for 2 with an RBI and Fernando Martinez was 1 for 3.

In the top of the fourth inning, the Bisons scored a pair of unearned runs, but the Zephyrs' pitching staff allowed just two hits the rest of the game. Offensively, they had 14 hits.

Mike Stanton, Vinny Rottino, Neil Sellers, Ben Lasater and Jesus Merchan all had RBIs to key the win. Stanton led New Orleans with three hits.

Buffalo's regular season begins April 7, at home, against Syracuse.
