John Santangelo of Niagara Falls, former president of the Niagara Falls Board of Realtors, died Wednesday in Schoellkopf Health Care Center. He was 87.
Born in Niagara Falls, one of six children, he was a graduate of Niagara Falls High School and earned an associate's degree in business from Niagara County Community College. He was involved in several businesses before he opened Santangelo Realty on Pine Avenue.
After his marriage to Josephine Spendio in 1946, he helped her start Tattlers Lane Bridal Shop and managed its business affairs. He also worked at Bell Aircraft and the Niagara Falls Power Co. He was office manager at Rainbow Food Service and owned and operated a coin laundry on Pine Avenue. He also was an agent for Stefik Realty.
Mr. Santangelo was one of the founders of the Midtown Little League and served 10 years as president. For many years, he organized the annual Ashland Avenue Reunion, held in the Como Restaurant. In 2006, he was honored for his efforts at the reunion.
He was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church, where he was a member of the Holy Name Society and received the Monsignor Tronolone Outstanding Achievement Award. He also was a member of the Knights of Columbus.
A member of Niagara Frontier Country Club, he shot a hole-in-one there. He also received the Sertoma Man of the Year Award.
In addition to his wife, survivors include two sons, John David and Michael; a daughter, Linda Koester; and three brothers, Robert, Richard and Ben.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be offered at 10 a.m. today in Holy Family of Jesus, Mary and Joseph Parish at St. Joseph Church, 27th Street and Independence Avenue.
