Just Buffalo Literary Center will host its first "Big Night" event of 2011 on Saturday in the Western New York Book Arts Center (468 Washington St.). This instance of the monthly event will feature a reading by Buffalo-born poet Lisa Jarnot, music by local band Jack Topht with the Vegetables and an art exhibition and reading featuring artists from the national "Combat Paper" project.
"Big Night," conceived as a monthly multidisciplinary art and poetry event in 2009, brings together Buffalo's visual art, music, poetry and foodie communities in the hopes of building audiences for each and creating artistic cross-pollination. Food is provided by local chef and small press publisher Geoffrey Gatza.
Jarnot, who now lives in Queens, is the author of four poetry collections, including "Some Other Kind of Mission," "Ring of Fire," "Black Dog Songs" and "Night Scenes." Jack Topht with the Vegetables is a two-person avant-garde rock group made up of Topht and Lindsey Lemberski. And Drew Matott, Chris Arendt and Margaret Mahan are part of the "Combat Paper" art project, an effort that allows military veterans to make art using paper formed from old uniforms. Their work is on view now in an exhibition at Niagara County Community College.
The event gets under way at 8 p.m. and costs $5. For more information, call 832-5400 or visit www.justbuffalo.org.
