Edward C. Tato, of Wheatfield, a Korean War veteran and retired railway worker, died Monday in ElderWood Health Care at Crestwood, Wheatfield. He was 78.
Born in Niagara Falls, he was a graduate of Niagara Falls High School and Erie County Technical Institute.
Mr. Tato served in the Army and was stationed in Korea during the Korean War.
He worked for New York Central, Penn Central and Conrail for 43 years before he retired in 1993. He was a member of the Brotherhood of Railway and Airline Clerks. For many years, he served as a board member of the Niagara Falls Penn Central Credit Union, of which he was also a supervisory committee member and vice president.
Mr. Tato was a longtime member of St. Amelia Catholic Church in the Town of Tonawanda, where he was a resident for more than 40 years. Along with his family, he also supported the Genesee/Orleans Ministry of Concern.
He is survived by his wife of 51 years, the former Carol
Gabriel; a daughter, Julie M.; three sons, Michael G., Edward J. and Paul; and a brother, James Tata.
A memorial Mass will be offered at 10:30 a.m. Saturday in St. Amelia Church, 2999 Eggert Road, Town of Tonawanda.
