RATAJCZAK - Richard A. "Dik"
Prominent Defense Systems Analyst, music lover, singer and family man died Tuesday, January 18, 2011 after a long illness. Born in Buffalo, he was a honor student from elementary school (Public School 57, Jesse Ketchum awards) through high school (Buffalo Technical, senior class vice-present), and through college (University of Buffalo) where he earned the BSEE summa cum laude and MSEE degrees. Mr. Ratajczak retired from Calspan (formerly Cornell Aeronautical Laboratory) as Principal Electronics Engineer after over 30 years service in defense system analysis and operation research, where he often led development of computerized simulation and analysis programs. He authored and co-authored many technical reports and papers. He was a member of Tau Beta Pi (National Engineering Honor Society) and the UB Engineering Alumni Association, and was a former member of Sigma Xi, the IEEE and the Air Force Association. In the community, Dik was active as a coach and the umpire in the Mel Ott Little League, as baritone in St. Leo's choir and folk/Good-News music group and as a singing actor in St. Leo's community players. An ardent bowler, he often served as a secretary of his leagues. His primary hobby was building and maintaining an extensive jazz record and history library. Mr. Ratajczak is survived by his wife, Dolores (Sinicki) Ratajczak; his sons, Greg (Kari), Jeffrey (Christine), Lin (Karen Toney), and Paul (Bridget); grandchildren, Sara, Megan, Alyssa, Ryan, Alex, Robin, Nicholas and Benjamin; uncle to many nieces and nephews.
