BERGER, Rae

BERGER - Rae Died peacefully at her home in Northampton, MA after a long illness. Born in Minneapolis in 1936, Rae graduated with honors from Barnard College, and in 1963, she received one of the first Ph.D.'s awarded in biochemistry to women at Harvard University. She married Dr. Jacob Berger, and they moved to Washington, DC to work at the National Institutes of Health. Jack and Rae then enjoyed two wonderful years living and working in England, driving around weekends to explore antique shops. Upon their return, they moved to Buffalo, raising two children, Dan Berger (Northampton, MA) and Sarah Berger (Mt. Kisco, NY), and staying there for 40 years. After her husband passed away, Rae moved to Florence, MA, where she continued to run a family business that she and Jack had founded. Despite being a city girl, Rae settled into the small town of Northampton, getting to know her grandchildren Rose Katz-Berger and Alex Katz-Berger, volunteering at their school, and being involved in the Jewish Seniors group at Congregation B'nai Israel. Rae was calm, resilient and upbeat throughout her four year struggle with cancer, living on her own until just a few months ago. She and her family are tremendously thankful for the abundant kindness shown in so many ways during that time. Funeral Services were held on Friday at Congregation B'nai Israel with burial in the Synagogue Cemetery in Northampton. Donations in her memory may be made to the local hospice at www.vnaandhospice.org/pages/ways_to_help.php. Arrangements entrusted to The CZELUSNIAK FUNERAL HOME of Northampton.
