AKIN, Herschel Elijah
AKIN - Herschel Elijah 91, died January 21, 2011 at Rowan Regional Medical Center, Salisbury, NC. He was born April 4, 1919 in Webster Co., WV, the son of the late Jaman Elijah and Mary Susan Waugh Akin and stepson of Letha Roberts Akin. A veteran of the USMC serving in WWII in the Pacific, he was a survivor of Iwo Jima. He was retired from the PA Railroad and the NY Central Railroad with 40 years service. Member of the Hamburg United Methodist Church, Hamburg, NY; Free and Accepted Masons of NY Lodge #419, Arcade, NY; Ismailia Temple AAONMS, Buffalo, NY; Legion of Honor, Buffalo, NY; Order of the Eastern Star #176 Hamburg, NY; The American Legion; and International Order of Oddfellows, Orchard Park, NY. Survivors include his wife Katherine, daughter Carolyn Dethpfs, grandchildren Adam and Stephanie, great-granddaughters Isabelle and Chole of Machias, NY; step-children Robert F. Krazmien, Sharon Furlano, Deborah Trinh, Mark Krazmien, and Mary Reiller. He is also survived by 19 step-grandchildren, 11 great-grandchildren, five great-great-grandchildren, one sister-in-law, 10 nieces and eight nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, first wife Edith Lander Akin, two brothers, three sisters, and one step-daughter. Masonic and VFW rites will be graveside in Webster Springs, WV.
