OLAF FUB SEZ: It was critic and essayist Alexander Woollcott, born on this date in 1887, who famously first said: "All the things I really like to do are either illegal, immoral or fattening."


FURRY FRIENDS -- There will be bites, but no barking when the Order of the Eastern Star, State of New York, holds an Erie District "Dog Show" Luncheon at noon Saturday in the West Seneca Masonic Hall, 647 Main St., West Seneca. All attending are asked to bring a six-inch plush dog, or larger, to show.

Tickets are $10 for a roast turkey buffet. Donations of dry and canned pet food will be collected for the SPCA Serving Erie County. There also will be theme baskets and raffles. For tickets, call 826-6881.


BIG THANK YOU -- Faith Fellowship Church, 11478 Main St., Clarence, is showing its appreciation for all those who serve in the law enforcement, firefighting and emergency medical fields with a First Responders Appreciation Banquet and an evening of tribute at 6:30 p.m. on Feb. 4.

All first responders and their families or guests are welcome, and it's free. Reservations, however, are a must. RSVP by Jan. 28 by calling the church office at 759-6632.


JOIN UP -- Want to do volunteer work with the Buffalo Philharmonic Orchestra? Plan on attending a meeting of the newly formed Friends of the BPO Volunteers at 5:30 p.m. next Wednesday in Kleinhans Music Hall.

There are opportunities to help with ushering at concerts, staffing the gift shop, office duties and assisting at special events. Refreshments will be served. For info, call 759-6428.


SEASON OPENER -- Looking ahead to warmer days are the organizers of the Elmwood-Bidwell Farmers' Market. They're already accepting designs for a new poster for their 2011 season.
