In late September of last year, the Elmwood Lounge (522 Elmwood Ave.) debuted a new biweekly series. Dubbed "Caustic Sets," the showcase was designed to highlight area singers, songwriters and musicians in what founder Jacob Drum calls a "mostly acoustic" environment. According to Drum, the evening is "more structured than your average open mic night, and it also brings many different influences together in the same room."
Six acts perform at each event, and so far the music created during the "Caustic" shows has ranged "from traditional solo acoustic, to horns, to cello, to accordion, to spoken word."
The next installment of "Caustic Sets" is 10:30 p.m. Thursday, following the weekly set from the Jamie Moses Band. This round will feature Patrick St. Johnson, Tony Flaminio of Failures' Union, Levi Van Cleve of Spirit Chief, Cassi Meyerhoffer, Catherine Glasgow and Kevin O'Brien Cain. Admission is $3.
Hard Rock Calling
When Buffalo's own More Than Me won the Hard Rock Calling contest, the band was treated to an opening slot on a massive bill inside London's Hyde Park that featured none other than Paul McCartney.
Now, the folks at the Hard Rock have announced the 2011 version of the contest. Hard Rock Calling 2011 will take place this summer, again in Hyde Park. The Hard Rock in Niagara Falls has launched its own "hunt for the area's best talent." It will host a battle of the bands, with the winner moving on to a regional competition. That winner enters "the final phase," during which fans from around the world can vote for their favorites online. Call 282-0007 or visit www.hardrock.com to register.
